figure / ground refers to a principle of visual perception rooted in Gestalt psychology, in which the relationship between an object and its surrounding field determines how an image is perceived. The film keeps figure and ground in perpetual visual indeterminacy, hinting at but remaining beyond recognition. In this way, the whole becomes more than the sum of its perceivable parts.
